Announces Rennovation Plans
Community and business leaders gathered Friday, June 27 for a ceremony that announced the official naming of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Nonprofit Center. Named in recognition of the organization’s generous contribution to the purchase of the facility, the building on Seaway Road is jointly owned by United Way of South Mississippi, Coast Chamber of Commerce, Gulf Coast Community Foundation and the Gulf Coast Business Council. Gulf Coast Business Council Accepting
Applications for Masters Program
The Gulf Coast Business Council announced today that applications are now being accepted for the 2008-2009 Masters Program leadership class. This executive, year-long program is designed to foster enlightened leadership and advance the discussion and resolution of regionally significant issues through a series of seminars based on open discussions.
Participation in the Masters Program is open to persons living and working in one of the three Coast counties of Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson who exhibit a demonstrated ability to critically examine issues on a regional basis and actively engage in efforts important to the region. Applicants should be in mid to upper level management or executive positions in a business or other organization.

Director of Research and Policy
Joins Gulf Coast Business Council

Scott King has joined the Gulf Coast Business Council’s team as Director of Research and Policy, announced the organization’s President, Brian Sanderson. The addition will strengthen the Business Council’s ability to gather and communicate sound research and policy analysis.
"Scott brings a wealth of analytical experience and a deep knowledge of the Mississippi Gulf Coast," said Sanderson. "He will enhance our mission to provide the united voice of business on matters of important public policy."
As Director of Research and Policy, King will work closely with Sanderson and members of the Business Council to gather and synthesize information related to economic and demographic indicators for the Gulf Coast region.
Governor Haley Barbour
Speaks at Government Exchange
Governor Haley Barbour joined city and county elected officials May 14 for the Gulf Coast Business Council’s Government Exchange. Business Council Chairman, Anthony Topazi, began the meeting with an updates on the REACH Mississippi program and encouraged the elected official’s support in this effort. Topazi also reminded the attendees of the Business Council’s efforts towards establishing the Gulf Coast as a tier one tourism destination. Governor Haley Barbour explained that this year is the critical year for the coast’s hurricane recovery, and stressed the importance of beginning many of the approved environmental and water/sewer projects.
The Government Exchange is a quarterly program of the Legislative and Governmental Committee that aims to maintain partnerships and collaboration with elected officials. The May 14 Exchange was the forth forum held since the Business Council’s formation.
GCBC Adopts Resolution
Supporting KC-45 Tanker Contract
The Gulf Coast Business Council has adopted a resolution supporting the selection of Northrop Grumman and EADS North America for the KC-45 refueling tanker contract, to be built at Brookley Field in Mobile, Alabama. The resolution was submitted with a letter of support last week to all members of the Mississippi Congressional Delegation urging the affirmation of this selection by the United States Air Force. Governor Barbour Signs
REACH Mississippi Bill
The Gulf Coast Renaissance Corporation’s main program of focus moved one step closer to reality last week when Governor Haley Barbour signed into law House Bill 1482. The REACH Mississippi Bill, supported by the Gulf Coast Business Council, will provide tax relief to working families with incomes below 120 percent of the area median income by allowing them to exclude certain funds from employer-assisted housing (EAH) programs from their taxable income.
